Singarevva and the Palace

Set in a village in North Karnataka, Singaravva and the Palace is the tale of a beautiful woman whose life is repeatedly commodified and mistreated by her greedy father, an impotent husband and an obsessive lover.  Her desire to be a wife and a mother is never fulfilled, while she faces public humilation for her supposed barenness.  A lifetime of disappointments and frustrations make Singaravva a bitter woman who finds her own way to exact revenge on her abusers.  Tragically, when Singarevva finally does give birth, she succumbs, leaving the baby and her tortured memories to her childhood companion and servant, Sheenigavva.  The tale is narrated by Sheenigavva, who weaves her narrative by stepping into the roles of twelve different characters over the course of the play.
