The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen is a high quality theatrical production for children produced by the Unicorn Theatre, UK’s flagship theatre for young audience, with support from the British Council in association with Trestle Theatre.

This dynamic production is a modern version of the classic European tale adapted by the talented playwright Anupama Chandrasekhar. Her adaptation gives new energy and exuberance to the traditional fairytale drawing on rich influences of Indian mythology, cultures and topography along with a sharp eyed comment on contemporary culture.

The central character, Gowrie travels from the Tamil Nadu town of Kanyakumari to the snowy mountains of Kashmir, visiting en route the Kerala backwaters, glitzy Bollywood and the barren Chambal Hills in central India, in her quest to rescue Kumar from the Snow Queen. The play looks at themes of loss, love, loyalty and friendship in the context of what it is to be a teenager today and casts children as the agent of change in a world where the adults have been on a course of destruction.
