Neelam Mansingh is one of the strongest voices in Indian theatre for decades now. Every play of hers has been received with great admiration and awe even, across the country. Every big fest at Ranga Shankara naturally features her work and for EQUAL, The License is tailor made - the story explores a woman's changing identity as she slips into a man's job.
In her Director's Note, Neelam says, "In The License, we have tried to explore the devastation brought upon women and families during migration, loss and devastation. Working on Manto and Brecht meant that I had to traverse the complexities of linguistic and cultural transferences. Both the writers have a deep sense of humanism and a modernity that seemed neither dated, nor trapped in regional boundaries."
The License, like all plays by Neelam Mansingh, has been acclaimed for its extraordinary storytelling with a gripping narrative and stunning visual design.
